Job Summary

A leading acute care hospital is seeking an experienced Pathology Medical Director to oversee the delivery of high-quality anatomic and clinical pathology services. This physician leader will provide diagnostic expertise while directing the medical and operational aspects of the pathology department, ensuring regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and outstanding patient care.

The ideal candidate is an AP/CP board-certified pathologist with strong experience in general surgical pathology, frozen section interpretation, and clinical pathology. The Medical Director will collaborate closely with hospital leadership, laboratory staff, and referring physicians to maintain excellence in laboratory operations and pathology services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Medical Director for the hospital pathology department.
  • Provide diagnostic interpretation for a broad range of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology cases.
  • Perform and interpret surgical pathology specimens and frozen section consultations.
  • Deliver clinical pathology consultation and guidance to physicians and healthcare providers.
  • Ensure laboratory operations meet CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Lead laboratory quality assurance, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with hospital administration, laboratory leadership, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Foster positive relationships with medical staff, laboratory personnel, and referring physicians.
  • Support laboratory inspections, accreditation activities, and regulatory compliance.
  • Mentor pathology and laboratory staff while promoting continuous professional development.
  • Participate in operational planning, utilization management, and strategic initiatives to improve laboratory performance.
  • Ensure timely, accurate pathology reporting and maintain high standards of diagnostic quality.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certified in Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP).
  • Active Texas medical license or ability to obtain licensure prior to employment.
  • Minimum of three years of hospital-based pathology experience preferred.
  • Recent experience in general surgical pathology and frozen section interpretation.
  • Comfortable practicing the full scope of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
  • Subspecialty fellowship training is preferred but not required.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare environments.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience serving in a pathology leadership or medical director role.
  • Fellowship training in a pathology subspecialty.
  • Experience managing laboratory quality programs and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and other laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Experience leading quality improvement and operational excellence initiatives.
